The Pearl is the most common color pattern of guinea. They are dark gray with white dots (pearls) on their feathers. Their heads are featherless and have a bright red crest and wattles. Guineas can be a great addition to your flock for several reasons. They eat lots of insects, especially devouring ticks. Guineas are also excellent alarms and can help protect your flock from daytime predators. Their eggs also have an incredible 20 grams of protein each!
Guinea hens can lay 60-100 eggs per year, but they do tend to hide their nests. Meyer Hatchery's Pearl Guineas are from breeding stock imported from France. Due to their breeding program, they are a hybrid and unlikely to reproduce on their own. Guineas have rich, dark, flavorful meat and are considered a delicacy in many areas. Male guineas weigh about 3.5 pounds and females about 3 pounds. When fed a game-bird starter and broiler feed, French Pearl Guinea Keets will reach a market weight of about 4 pounds by 12 weeks of age, making them a great meat bird option. They can easily fly short distances and like to roost high in trees.
Guineas are processed around 75 days of age with a feed conversion of 3.7:1 and have an average live weight of 2.67 lbs.
