The Celadon Layer Quail is the result of a recent genetic discovery from Canada. The Celadon gene (ce gene) is a recessive gene resulting in a lightly tinted blue egg. Selective breeding has led to this new and exciting offering of Coturnix Celadon Quail blue egg layers. Meyer Hatchery's Celadon Quail are "true blue" meaning 100% of your chicks will carry the blue gene. The hatchlings from these eggs will present in a variety of feathering patterns that will go on to lay in a range of solid or spotted blue eggs.
Raising quail is gaining in popularity because of their easy keeping, fast maturity, and high egg production. Quail reach maturity at just 6 weeks and will begin laying at 8 weeks of age. They'll lay one egg per day and yearly production can reach 300 eggs. Celadon eggs weight around 12.8 grams. Adult females are typically larger than males with the birds ranging from 6 to 12 ounces.
Quail adapt easily to most conditions but are prone to being startled easily. Accommodations should be made so that the quail have shelter from the elements while maintaining an unobstructed view beyond their enclosure. The nesting area should be quiet and have niches and corners for comfort. Adding branches will help these ground-dwellers feel safe and secure.
