The Jumbo White Coturnix Quail are an excellent option for homesteaders due to laying the largest eggs as well as being the same size as the largest meat breed. This breed will hatch true for roughly 98% of the chicks. For the 2 out of 100 that won’t be solid white, there may be a stray marking or dark spot on the head and an occasional Pharoah feather pattern. This is normal and expected.
Males and females will be similarly sized, so vent sexing is the only way to determine gender. Vent sexing can be attempted after 8 weeks of age but without practice, it may be better attempted after 10 weeks of age when they reach full maturity.
Jumbo White Coturnix Quail can reach 11.5 to 12.5 ounces at roughly 10 weeks of age. Egg production will begin anywhere from 5 to 8 weeks of age and peak egg production will be reached when the bird is just under 2 years of age. Yearly egg production will be roughly 275 eggs and eggs will weigh 12 to 13 grams each.
