Lady Amherst Pheasants originated in Southwestern China and Northern Burma and are a great choice for first-time pheasant keepers as they are calm, docile, and easy-going. They adapt easily into captivity and because these are adults of at least 1 year of age, they already have their full colorful plumage developed and the beauty of your birds is immediate.

The ideal aviary setting for these pheasants is one that offers plenty of room for them, as they are active birds. They can fly, but prefer to keep to the ground and run. They can be expected to roost in lower tree branches. This hardy breed is tolerant to the heat and cold temperatures and will easily adapt to aviary settings.

The Lady Amherst Pheasants have a diet consisting mainly of seeds, grains, greens, and insects, however, you will want to provide a fresh supply of standard game bird feed. The breeding season runs from May until mid-Fall, and males can mate with more than one female, with females laying clutches of 6 to 12 creamy buff-colored eggs. The incubation period is approximately 24 days.

The average weight of the adult females is 1.5 pounds with the males weighing approximately 1.75 pounds. The average body length is 43 inches, with the tail being almost 80% of that total length. These birds can be expected to live up to 15 years in captivity.
