As the name suggests, this breed was developed in Rhode Island and is even the state's official bird. It has many profitable characteristics such as they are calm birds and are among the best layers for a heavy breed. They lay around 4-6 large brown eggs weekly and are rarely broody. Adult hens will grow to about 6 1/2 pounds. Read more about the Rhode Island Red Chicken on our Breed Spotlight over on the Meyer Hatchery Blog.
