Your flock isn’t complete until you have a crowning jewel among it. The beautiful Sapphire Jewel is a Meyer Hatchery exclusive hybrid chicken bred to produce a large number of varying shades of blue eggs. This hybrid chicken is white with gray or black flecks in the feathering and has clean legs. Since this is a hybrid, the leg color, earlobe color, muffs, and comb type may vary. The average rate of lay is 6-7 eggs per week. Please note, there is a chance of a brown egg.
The frizzle feathering doesn't show in the baby chicks but will show up by 3 weeks of age. Since the trait does not breed true, some of your chicks will develop smooth feathers and the others will be frizzled. Read more about Frizzle Presentation in Poultry.
This breed is a hybrid. Hybrids are created by crossing two different parents and will not breed true. Crosses are generally created for vigor and production qualities, but also for desired traits such as egg color or feather patterns. Meyer Hatchery does not disclose what breeds we use to create our designer breeds as that is considered proprietary knowledge.
