The Reeves Pheasant is a boldly patterned pheasant originating from the forests of central and eastern China. This pheasant was named after the naturalist John Reeves after his discovery. The male Reeves Pheasant has the longest natural tail features, and the tail feathers can reach a maximum length of just over 7 feet. the males are also typically golden with distinctive black markings. Males can reach an average weight of just under 3 pounds, and have an overall length of around 82 inches. The males have a melodic call, similar to a warble. Female Reeves Pheasants have a shorter tail than the males, and are more muted in color. They are typically mottled brown, buff, and white, making for excellent camouflage in nature. Female Reeves Pheasants will reach approximately 2 pounds, and an overall length around 30 inches. The Reeves Pheasants are considered rare due to decline in their natural habitats.
Reeves Pheasants are known to be more easy and common to raise. They require a larger aviary setup, and are a hardy breed, doing well in both warm and cold climates. When setting up your aviary for the Reeves Pheasants you want to include large shrubs and higher branches. These Pheasants prefer to lay their nests in higher areas. For their diet they enjoy seeds, vegetables, and cereals. You can also supplement their food with standard game bird feed, and other greens.
The Reeves Pheasants will mate from April to July, laying a clutch of 7-14 olive colored eggs. Incubation of the eggs takes 25 days. Reeves Pheasant chicks can be aggressive, and it is suggested to put them into a separate brooder away from other species. With the Reeves Pheasants you can have 1 male paired with several females. The male Reeves Pheasant can be aggressive to other males, and even their keepers, especially during breeding season. The Reeves Pheasants are able to breed after their first year.
