The California Valley Quail is the state bird of California. It exhibits a similar head crest as the Gambel’s Quail and is sometimes confused with its nearest relative. The difference is the head color, the California males will have a dark brown cap.
The Blue Scale Quail derives its name from the scaly appearance of feathers on its back and breast. Blue Scale Quail also have a tufted white crest which lends to their nickname, The Cotton Top.
Native to the desert regions of the American Southwest, this quail was named after naturalist and ornithologist William Gambel. Easily recognized by its top knot plumage and copper-colored head, it’s rarely seen in flight. The Gambel’s Quail are most comfortable in the undergrowth and brushy terrain. Adding similar features to their domestic accommodations will encourage nest building for the pair.
