Elliot's Pheasants, also known as the Chinese Barred-Backed Pheasants or Bar-Backed Pheasants, are one of the rarer of pheasant breeds due to habitat loss. Elliot's are originally from the mountains of southeast China and are therefore hardy to both extremes of temperature.
These beautiful birds do well in a large aviary setup but do require plenty of natural shade as their plumage tends to fade in direct sunlight. A noteworthy point is that the males of this breed can be aggressive towards the females, so it’s a good idea to provide an abundance of shrubbery or branches to allow the hens escape.
Elliot's Pheasants consume a diet of berries, seeds, leaves, grain, and insects in the wild. In captivity, you will also want to supplement with a standard game bird feed, greens, and insects.
Breeding season for Elliot's Pheasants is from March through May. One male can be housed with up to three females as long as they have plenty of roosting sites. Females will lay a clutch of 6 to 8 rosy-white eggs which take about 26 days to incubate.
Male Elliot's Pheasants will grow up to 31" in length, females around 20". Elliot's will live to be approximately 12 years old.
