Fulvous Whistling Ducks also known as Fulvous Tree Ducks, have their origins in Mexico and South America, as well as the sub-Saharan Africa and the southern United States. They are mostly covered in reddish-brown feathers and will show off a vibrant white band across its black tail when in flight. They prefer shallow lakes and ponds, or other wetlands with abundant plant vegetation.
Fulvous Whistling Ducks get their diet mainly from seeds and green plants, bulbs, grasses, and even a few insects. Rice, along with a standard waterfowl feed, is also a part of their regular diet. Fulvous Whistling Ducks will feed on the water by up-ending, skimming the surface, or diving if necessary. In an aviary setting, you’ll want to provide a fresh pond or man-made water source, as well as plenty of abundant plants and some smaller trees.
Fulvous Whistling Ducks may pair for life, forming a strong bond, with mating sometimes taking place on the water. They prefer to nest on the ground near water or in a low dense marsh area just above the water. Females will lay clutches of 8 to 12 white colored eggs, with incubation by both sexes lasting 24 to 26 days. The young will swim and dive well with the help of the parents and will readily find their own food.
Fulvous Whistling Ducks average adult body length is 18 to 21 inches long. Males weigh approximately 26 to 37 ounces and females weigh 25 to 35 ounces. These birds naturally vocal. These birds are mainly found in small groups, although in prime or favored areas larger groups can form in the wild.
