Grit is an important addition to every age of a chicken’s and turkey’s diet, as it helps in the development of their gizzard. The gizzard helps with their digestion and helps to break down the nutrient from your feed of choice. Grit should be offered as free choice, especially if there is no access to small, sharp rocks. Meyer Hatchery's grit is crushed granite, which is harder than yard stones and is, therefore, the best option for your birds.
Starter Grit: For chicks and young poults, it is suggested to sprinkle the grit over their feed starting at week 4 for 2-3 weeks. Offer this grit as free choice in a separate dish.
Grower Grit: Grower grit is sized appropriately for birds in their growing phase and can be given starting at 5 to 6 weeks of age up until 16 weeks of age. Grit that is too small will pass right and have no effect.
Layer Grit: Once your chicks reach 14 weeks they are ready to switch over to layer grit. This grit is appropriate for 14 week and older chickens.
Turkey Grit: Once your poults reach 14 weeks they are ready to switch over to our turkey grit. This grit is appropriate for 14 week and older turkeys.
