India Blue Peafowl originate from the forests and fields of Sri Lanka, India, and Pakistan and are also known as Blue Peafowl or Common Peafowl. Although they are commonly referred to as peacocks, that is the name for the males, with the females called peahens and the species collectively known as peafowl. The National Bird of India, they are a very hardy bird that does well in an aviary setting, as long as plenty of space is provided for them to wander, as they prefer a free-range environment. These birds are common in aviary settings, easy to care for, and are quite vocal, so a large space is recommended for them. It is also suggested that your aviary have plenty of smaller bushes and trees, as these birds prefer to roost in the trees.
India Blue Peafowl are visually stunning, with the males showing off a large, colorful display of long tail feathers and an iridescent blue-green coloring on the neck and body. Females have a duller white, brown, green, gray, and blue coloring to their plumage, and a shorter, less colorful tail. Adult males can weigh between 9 and 13 lbs with adult hens weighing from 6 to 9 lbs.
India Blue Peafowl consume almost anything including insects, seeds, grains, berries, and fruits, but should be provided a source of standard game bird feed and drinking water for a balanced, healthy diet.
India Blue Peafowl will breed between March and July, with males maturing in their third year, although some males may be ready to mate by the second year of age. Females will lay a clutch of 4 to 8 light brown eggs, and birds in captivity will possibly lay three clutches in a season. Incubation occurs for approximately 28 days. In captivity, healthy birds can live up to 40 or 50 years of age.
