Leghorns might be considered a well traveled chicken breed. They first came to North America in the mid 1830 from Italy where they originated. Leghorns traveled back across the Atlantic ocean from North America to Britain in the 1870s. It’s possible that the first round of Leghorns which came to North America died out and that the breeds we have here now result from birds that came to North America in the 1850s. We thank whichever group gave us the Leghorn breeds we have come to love today because these birds have fantastic laying ability, hardly ever go broody and do well in both free range or confined environments.
These lovely, INSERT COLOR INFO HERE, are active birds that will lay (SIZE and NUMBER) white eggs per week. You can expect egg laying to begin about 20 weeks of age. Mature hens will weigh about 3 ½ to 5 pounds and roosters about 5-6 pounds. (I took the ranges from all the leghorns we carry.
