Red Golden Pheasants are possibly the most popular pheasant kept by aviculturists. They come from the mountains of China and are quite cold hardy. These birds are highly intelligent and their strikingly beautiful plumage is quite vibrant as adults, making these birds an excellent choice for beginners. These adult birds will be fully colored upon arrival as they are at least one year in age.
Red Golden Pheasants can withstand the colder temperatures in the winter without much shelter, however, in the summer months, you will want to make sure they have plenty of shade in their aviaries. They are compatible with other types of birds and will do well in aviary settings. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, insects, berries, greens, and grains, and they will do most of their feeding by foraging on the ground. However, you will want to always provide a standard game bird feed to supplement this diet. Also, make sure to always provide a fresh water supply.
Red golden Pheasants breed quite easily in captivity, with the breeding season starting in April and running through June. One male can mate with several females, with the females laying clutches of 5 to 12 eggs, and the incubation period lasting approximately 22-23 days.
Red Golden Pheasants can live up to 20 years of age in captivity, and adult males being 35 to 41 inches in total body length, with the females slightly smaller. The tails on both males and females can account for almost two-thirds of their total body length!
