Red Golden Pheasants are one of the most popular pheasants kept by aviculturists. They are hardy, beautiful, very intelligent and great for beginners. Red Golden's are possibly the first type of pheasant introduced to North America. They are originally from the mountains of China and are therefore very cold hardy.
For those just starting out or with limited aviary space, this is an excellent choice of pheasant to raise. They are very compatible with other types of birds. They do well in the cold winter even with little or no shelter. Because they are forest birds, it is necessary to provide plenty of shade during the summer months.
Red Golden Pheasants are foragers and will consume a diet of berries, greens, insects, seeds, and grains. You will also want to supplement with standard game bird feed.
Red Golden Pheasants easily breed in captivity. Breeding season is April to June, and one male will breed with several females. A clutch of 5 to 12 eggs will be laid and will hatch in approximately 22-23 days. It is recommended to provide as much natural surroundings for them as possible.
Red Golden Pheasant males are 35 to 41 inches in length, with the tail being two-thirds of the total body length. Females are smaller with the tails accounting for almost half of their length. Red Golden Pheasants are named after the male's brightly colored tail feathers used to attract the attention of predators from females. The female, on the other hand, is dull so that she can remain hidden from predators while tending to her clutch. Red Golden's can live up to 20 years in captivity.
