Swinhoe Pheasants have their origins in the forested mountain regions of Taiwan and are considered to be a rare breed due it’s decreasing habitat. The popularity of this bird continues to grow due to the fact that they adapt well to aviary settings, are easy to tame, and are generally quite docile. They are most active in the early morning and late afternoon, roosting in the trees at nightfall.
Swinhoe Pheasants will require a large aviary that provides plenty of space and abundant trees and bushes for shade. However, they do not require a lot of shelter, as they are very hardy birds and will do quite well in hot or cold climates. They have a diet consisting mainly of seeds, grains, greens, grasses, berries, and grapes. You will want to supplement this diet with a standard game bird feed and a constant, fresh supply of water.
Swinhoe Pheasants are usually fertile at 1 year of age, with the breeding season beginning in April and ending in September. These birds pair up, so one male should be kept with one female. Clutches of 2-8 glossy pink eggs will be laid afterward, with females building their nests close to the base of a tree or under a rock. Incubation of these eggs will last approximately 25-28 days.
Swinhoe Pheasant adult males have an average body length of 31 inches, with adult females measuring approximately 20 inches long. Their long tails account for almost half of this total body length. These birds are adults, fully grown, and fully feathered, so their beautiful coloring will be showing the minute they arrive! In captivity, healthy birds can live up to 15 years of age or more!
