Basque Hens, also called Marraduna Basque Hen and Euskal Oiloa, are a medium-sized, dual-purpose bird that has been developed by the Basque people, hardy farmers, and shepherds who reside in the mountainous regions of Spain and France. Basque Hens are a landrace breed of chicken that, due to the harshness of the climate where they originate, thrives in conditions that would kill less hardy breeds. They are considered hardy in all climates.
As a breed, Basque Hens have a friendly disposition and are a great choice for beginner and experienced chicken enthusiasts. Basque hens lay approximately 4 medium to large cream eggs per week. Hens mature at around 6.5-pounds, while roosters mature around 8-pounds.
