Black Sumatras are a very distinguished, long-legged chicken. Males are known for their lustrous long flowing tail feathers of beetle-green black that can grow up to 4 feet in length with the appropriate space and care. Black Sumatras were introduced in the US in 1847. They are still as pure blooded today as they were when first discovered on the remote island of Sumatra in the Far East. This breed is known for their dark to black skin and excellent flying and jumping capabilities. They can easily jump 6 feet, even with clipped wings.
Black Sumatra roosters can be aggressive but only to those of its own breed and mainly during breeding season. Fighting will subside after the season is over. Multiple spurs are usually found on males and are to be desired for show. Our Black Sumatras are an excellent exhibition choice. Black Sumatras lay about 3-5 white eggs per week.
Average Mature Weight: Roosters 5 lbs, Hens 4 lbs.
