The bronze turkeys originated from a cross between the domestic breeds brought by European colonists to the America’s with the Eastern Wild Turkeys. The cross breed resulted in a larger bird than the European breeds and a much tamer version of Eastern Wild Turkey. The Standard Bronze Heritage Turkey coloring exposes a russet-bronze metallic sheen which was inherited by it’s Eastern Wild Turkey ancestors.
The Standard Bronze Turkeys are known to have a longer lifespan with a natural ability to breed and excellent foraging skills creating exceptional flavor. These attributes make this breed perfect for the small farm or backyard flock owner.
Heritage breed turkeys do have a longer grow out period than your Broad Breasted varieties and are typically processed at 24 to 28 weeks.
