White Leghorn Chickens are one of the top egg-producing breeds, often laying 335 or more extra large white eggs per year or 5+ per week! These chickens were developed in Italy and brought to the United States in 1835. They are likely the most popular breed of laying chicken worldwide. Leghorns are very economical because of their high production rate, yet they consume small feed portions. They also mature early, often laying by 20 weeks of age. White Leghorns are a perfect choice for pastured, free-range settings and organic homesteads.
White Leghorns have all-white feathers, yellow skin and legs, and a single red comb. They are very beautiful birds and are often raised for exhibition and egg-laying capabilities. Contrary to belief, no nutritional difference exists between white eggs and brown or other colored eggs. Meyer Hatchery's White Leghorns are considered the Industrial type and are the Novagen White strain.
Average mature weight: Roosters 6 lbs., Hens 4 1/2 lbs.
