Brought into the US in 1820, the Embden is one of the oldest domestic goose breeds. They are also the tallest; reaching more than three feet. This breed has a long graceful neck, short tail, orange legs and feet and beautiful clear blue eyes. Adult Embdens are pure white, but juveniles may have some gray feathering typically on the back or rump. Although mature males and females look alike, goslings can be sexed by the color of their downy feathers as early as three weeks old. They are well known for use in commercial meat production due to their rapid growth rate and generous size. The Embden goose lays the largest eggs of all goose breeds; perfect for crafting and or baking. Embden geese are usually very friendly but ganders can become extremely protective during the breeding season.
Juveniles of this breed may have black or gray. By 21 weeks of age, they should be fully feathered with white feathers.
Meat production information: Embden Geese are processed around 112 days of age with an average live weight of 15.7 lbs and average eviscerated weight of 11.5 lbs. The feed conversion rate is 5.0:1.
